The unemployment rate in Cyprus in the first quarter of 2019 reached 8.8%. In the same period last year, it was 10.7%. This means that 7,216 people were able to find a job. The relevant data is published by the Statistical Office of Cyprus. In total, the number of unemployed in Cyprus is 39,252. (in the same period of 2018, it was 46,468 people). Of these, 18,145 men or 7.7% of the total male population, 23,107% or 9.9% of the total female population of women. Among young people aged 15–24, the number of unemployed was 19.8% (of those who left school and entered the labor market). Of these, men are 22.1%, women – 18%. This is less than in 2018, when the same figure was 25.3% of unemployed youth aged 15-24.
In the first trimester of 2019, the number of people who have been unable to find work for many years was 9,760 (in the first trimester of 2018 there were 13,852 people).
The number of able-bodied residents of the Republic of Cyprus is 448,369 people (63.2% of the population). In 2018, their number was less – 432,566 people or 62% of the population. Of these, 409,117 people were employed, that is, 63.4% of all men and 52.2% of all women on the island. In the first quarter of 2018, this figure was 55.3% of the population.
